Diversity in Mold Types

Friday, October 20, 2023

Mold encompasses a wide array of varieties, with each type and species capable of affecting individuals uniquely. In fact, the impact of each mold can differ significantly from person to person.

Molds can be categorized into three primary types: allergenic, toxigenic, and infectious.

Allergenic molds, the most prevalent among mold types, can induce a range of issues for those exposed to them, particularly over extended periods. Allergic reactions, such as Hay Fever, are the most common consequences of exposure to allergenic molds, but they can also exacerbate symptoms of certain tissue diseases.

Toxigenic molds, on the other hand, pose a stark contrast to allergenic molds. These molds release toxins when ingested or inhaled, leading to serious complications. The most widely recognized toxigenic mold is often referred to in the media as "Black Mold," scientifically known as Stachybotrys, which is just one of several species categorized as "Black Mold."

The most potentially perilous category is infectious molds, which can be especially harmful to individuals with compromised immune systems due to existing illnesses, weakened immune function from factors such as certain cancers, the elderly, very young individuals, and those undergoing drug therapy.

Certain molds grow at a faster rate than others, serving as warning signs of underlying issues. Indicator molds, like Cladosporium, can signify water damage problems.

While mold types vary, it's important to note that virtually all of them have the potential to jeopardize one's health. If you suspect a mold issue in your home, please contact an expert from Building Performance Solution for assistance.
